Santa Barbara Choral Society and Orchestra Presents
A SEA SYMPHONY
Ralph Vaughan Williams
Plus Morten Lauridsen's LUX AETERNA
JoAnne Wasserman, Conductor
The opening event of the 2010 Sea Festival, this special concert promises to be one of Santa Barbara's most memorable performances. Described by the late Robert Shaw as “the most beautiful piece of choral music written in the 20th century,” Vaughan Williams "A Sea Symphony" sets the text of Walt Whitman’s "Leaves of Grass" to music in a stirring hymn to humanity.
Never has the sea been so powerfully evoked through music. The silent, lonely shore and the flat calm of night... battling the swell in a great sailing ship... the vastness of the ocean stretching to eternity...
Also featuring Morten Lauridsen's "Lux Aeterna," and a stunning multimedia short video of the Pacific Ocean coast by local photographer Douglas Cummings, this program will inspire audiences of all ages.
